Shifting to the Left: The Rise of Sinn Féin in the 2020 Irish General Election by Kennedy Fiorella

2022-06-13

This paper seeks to determine, how do the results of the 2020 General Election indicate Ireland’s shift towards an increasingly progressive voter base?

In the last election, Sinn Féin, the democratic socialist and Irish republican left-leaning party, won a majority of the vote at 24.5% the highest since the election of 1923, a significant 10.17% increase from the 13.8% achieved in the 2018 election.

The objective of this research is to analyze the electoral results, secondary sources, and news sources to assess what led to Sinn Féin’s historic results in the 2020 Irish election, and what has led to the increase in progressive politics in Ireland.

Call for Papers

The Undergraduate Journal of Politics, Policy and Society (UJPPS) is an emerging interdisciplinary academic journal that publishes peer-reviewed work of undergraduate students in social sciences and humanities. The journal provides a platform for aspiring academics to gain experience in publishing, research, and critical thinking while contributing to current debates and discussions in their disciplines. The UJPPS is currently soliciting submissions in the form of academic essays and literary reviews for its upcoming issue.

The theme for the 2021 issue is Politics in the Pandemic. Not bound to any one nation, border or community, the coronavirus, commonly referred to as the COVID-19 pandemic, has presented itself as a threat to global health and stability. As of September 16, 2020, the pandemic has infected nearly 30 million people and has led to close to one million deaths (Johns Hopkins University, 2020). Exploring the multiple transformative dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 issue aims to analyse shifts in the political, social, economic and environmental spheres. We invite submissions discussing how COVID-19 influences technology and media; globalization and anti-globalization; global health; economic development; migration and refugees; elections and leadership; liberty and democracy; governance and administration; as well as policing and marginalization. These topics engage with a diverse set of questions, such as:

  • How has (social) media contributed to the spread of (mis)information?
  • Has this ‘transboundary’ crisis shifted political views on globalization?
  • What does the pandemic tell us about shortcomings in health care systems?
  • How are countries responding to economic instability and uncertainty?
  • How have migrants and refugees been affected by COVID-19?
  • Why have certain countries been more successful in responding to the pandemic than others?
  • How does the pandemic affect environmental policies?
  • How does the pandemic pose challenges for elections?
  • How have marginalized communities been affected by the pandemic?
  • How has the pandemic triggered different forms of securitization?

The submission deadline is November 1st, 2020. Interested authors should submit their manuscript via the journal’s homepage: https://www.ujpps.com/index.php/ujpps

All submissions must conform to the journal’s submission guidelines. Submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process and those selected by the UJPPS editorial team will be revised, finalized, and published in the 2021 issue of the journal. All submissions will be entered for the UJPPS Article of the year award. Questions pertaining to this call for papers should be directed to the UJPPS editorial team at editor@ujpps.com.

We look forward to your submission.
